Nandi county senator Samson Cherargei has condemned the blanket condemnation the police are receiving in regards to the way they handled the University of Nairobi students during their demonstrations.
According to Cherargei, the public should not be criticizing the police for allegedly handling the whole situation with brutality without looking at previous events that led to the actions.
The senator believes the rioting students stoned the police, injuring some of them in the process and thus forcing the police to react.
"Why are we subjecting the police to blanket condemnation without consideration to the whole situation. People are only siding with the students but not the police who were also injured in the process," said Cherargei.
Cherargei however called on the public to let mandated independent bodies to investigate the whole issue before making judgments.
Speaking in a political debate on Citizen TV on Monday, the lawmaker noted that the police work in a hard environment that push some of them to act in a much more forceful way.
"In fact, we should not condemn the police before thorough investigation is done. We need to let the mandated independent bodies carryout investigations into the matter before we comment on it. We further should not forget that these policemen work in very hard conditions," added Cherargei.
