The government is in the process of acquiring anti-riot gear following an increase in cases of riots in the country.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the anti-riot vehicles and gear for the police will help to minimise risks in case of violent confrontations.
The police will acquire armored personnel carriers to increase their mobility and protective gear when deployed in volatile areas, he said.
“You will no longer throw stones at police during riots. We are bringing in anti-riot gear that will help the police deal with rioters who we see are increasing.”
The gear which he said would be delivered next month includes special police clothes, clubs and special anti-riot water cannon.
“This is part of the efforts to equip and modernize the police service. The government is also in the process of recruiting more officers with some expected to report to various training colleges soon,” Nkaissery said when he unveiled a new police helicopter.
Nkaissery said that individuals organising protests are free to do so but they should not allow their protest to turn violent.
“Let us engage in responsible protests to send the message home. We will not tolerate violent protests at all.”
