The deceased was hit by a car along Marani-Nyakongo road last week and tha driver is still at large.

They said more than five witnesses had recorded statements at Marani Police Station in favour of the family, hence the police have the task to apprehend the culprit to face the full force of the law.

“It is painful to loose a young man who had an impaired vision due to reckless driving by the driver. We are surprised that even the driver knew him so well but went on to hit him before running away,” said Evans Machuka, a relative.

“He should have saved his life by rushing him to hospital. We in fact had to wait for over one hour to take the deceased to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” added Machuka.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the Matatu lost control and veered off the road knocking the blind man in the process.

“I saw the vehicle knocking down the boy before the driver of the vehicle disappeared without taking the boy to hospital despite our plea to take the injured boy to hospital,” said witness Robert Onchwari.

However, Marani OCPD Bernard Kimwele has defended his officers from scathing attacks by villagers who claimed that police were not serious in pursuing the suspect. He insisted that investigations were ongoing and his forces were pursuing the suspect.
