Speaking to journalists in Mandera Town on Monday, Mahbub asked the government to put in place proper security measures that will guarantee security during the holy month of Ramadhan that starts on May 26 to June 24.

She said that Muslims and other locals have a right to security. “Government security organs must beef up security and ensure safety of Muslims and other Kenyans as we mark the holy month of Ramadhan,” she said as quoted by the People Daily.

The Woman Rep said criminal elements might take advantage of the Ramadhan period to instigate criminal activities.

She at the same time urged Muslims to pray for peaceful August polls as they mark Ramadhan.

The Mandera Woman Rep said that the country needs a peaceful envirtonemnt to conduct credible August 8 polls.

On Sunday during a tour of Mandera County, Deputy President William Ruto said that the government will lift a curfew that had been placed on the county over security issues.

The DP said that the government will lift the ban to ensure that Muslims have ample time to pray and mark Ramadhan.

Last week, two cases of suspected terror were reported in Mandera.

On Monday last week, a local chief was allegedly killed by assailants suspected to be members of the Al-Shabaab at his home in Arabiya.

On Wednesday, one person was killed after the vehicle he was travelling in ran over a suspected Improvised Electronic Device (IED) in Elwak, Mandera County.

North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamed Saleh says that police have beefed up surveillance and that there is no need for locals to worry.

Saleh however wants locals to be vigilant and report suspicious people to the police.
