Nakuru Human Rights Network says the police forced should not use excessive force unless when dealing with armed criminal.

Responding to a case where a flower farm worker is demanding justice after he was shot and seriously injured by a police officer in Kamere estate, Naivasha, NAHURINET Director David Kuria said there is need for  police to be disciplined when dealing with people in society.

"It's sad that the police still use excessive force even when there are reforms in the police department and a s a human right defender, I strongly condemn that and urge the department of prosecution to ensure justice for the victims,"said Kuria.

According to sources, Josphat Gwandaru who was shot  on the left leg was injured at Moi South Lake road after he resisted arrest  and that  the farm worker attempted to grab a gun from an officer at that time.

"We confronted them following a tip off by the public who complained about their suspicious activities. One of the suspects went for the gun and was accidentally shot on the thigh," said a source who did not want to be identified.

He added that four suspects were arrested while Gwandaru was rushed to the Naivasha hospital.

But the victim denied the police's take on the issue. He said they were playing poker - a gamble game - at one of the bars when armed police officers stormed and ordered them to surrender.

He said that a commotion ensued with some of those present using the cover of darkness to flee before one of the officers opened fire.

"In the process some of my colleagues ran away. I followed them but one of the officers shot me without any provocation," said Gwandaru.

Speaking to the media, Naivasha sub-county hospital superintendent Joseph Mburu said the bullet fractured the patient's left hip.

He said that the patient will be referred to Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital for specialised treatment.

"The bullet is still lodged in the leg and he requires special surgery so that the shattered hip bone can be repaired," Mburu said.

Cases of police's use of excessive force to handle suspects has been on the rise in the country lately.
