Garissa police boss Aron Moriasi said the aspirants will face dire consequences for engaging in violence adding that the rising cases of violence and intolerance will not be condoned.

Speaking to the press in his office, the police boss encouraged the aspirants to continue with their peaceful campaigns and to warn their supporters against engaging in violence.

Moriasi however assured aspirants and the residents of enhanced security but warned that that his officers would not tolerate any electoral violence.

“We want to call upon all political parties and aspirants to conduct themselves peacefully during the party primaries and as the country heads towards the elections,” he said.

“We want aspirants to take the lead in security. But we will not allow their supporters to engage in hooliganisms,” he said.

Last week, several people sustained minor injuries after supporters of National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale clashed with supporters of Wiper’s Farah Maalim in Garissa Ndogo.

Police officers were forced to shoot in the air and use tear gas to disperse the angry supporters that were hurling stones at each other.

Maalim who is from the National Super Alliance (NASA) is battling it out with Jubilee Party’s Duale for the Garissa Township parliamentary seat.
