A KCSE invigilator is nursing bullet injuries at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu after he was shot in the arm and leg by a police officer who was manning exams at Gagra Secondary School, Rarieda sub-county.
Simon Ong’iti, who is a teacher at Kunya Primary School, was shot in his left thigh as he and his colleagues were sealing CRE papers at around 10:30 am.
According to Rarieda sub-county Administration Police Commandant Mr Allan Abungu, who confirmed the incident, the bullet went through Ongiti’s hand before being lodged in his thigh.
Siaya county police coordinator Chripus Mutali said they were investigating whether the shooting by sergeant Benson Asesa was accidental or intentional.
Asesa, who was immediately withdrawn from the examination centre, recorded a statement on the incident.
"We are waiting to identify the degree of the injuries before the teacher can file a case," said Mutali.
He added that officers guarding exams would be debriefed on the exercise. Candidates had to be counseled before writing their mid-morning examinations.
