Parliament has admitted a proposal to set the age limit for presidential candidates.
The petition puts the age limit for all those interested at the presidency to be 70 and below.
The petitioner, a Mr Mohammed Sheikh from Wajir County, wants changes made to the constitution to ensure those who want to run for the top seat do not exceed 70 years.
Seen as a political tool targeting Opposition bigwig Raila Odinga, the petition has attracted fireworks from his soldiers.
Raila is currently 73 years old.
“This motion will only be a waste of Parliament time. It is in bad faith and a mischievous way to lock out one Kenyan from seeking the presidency. In the spirit of the handshake, we should not spoil the mood by introducing such a mischievous petition,” Endebess MP Robert Pukose said furiously.
He was, however, overruled by Speaker Justin Muturi who said it the the right of every Kenyan to petition the house on any matter.
“We cannot take away the right of any Kenyan as specifically stated in the Constitution,” said Muturi.
