Political parties have been called upon to lower the application fees being charged for every party member willing to vie for any seat.
Speaking at Marsh Park Hotel Ngong Road, the International Republican Institute (IRI) spokesperson Charles Odera said the issue is giving youths sleepless nights.
"Nairobi’s population is populated by youths. This means the youths have more chances to vie for different positions compared to the old. However, majority of those elected are not youths. In the parliament we have very few youths. This means the old people dominate the house," he said.
Odera said this is caused by the parties which set very high fees for aspirants causing visionary youths who cannot raise the amount to shun away from politics.
He further asked all youth aspirants to form youth links within their localities to enable them chose the best leaders, adding that IRI will start supporting these links by empowering them with skills and knowledge on how to win in any presidential election starting next year.
The event coordinator Daniel Orogo also said that youths should support fellow youths in the 2017 general elections.
"As peace builders in Nairobi, we are able to vote youthful leaders who are influential. We only need to be strong and vibrant," added Orogo.
