Nyaribari Chache politician, Rachael Otundo has faulted political parties' mode of nominating women to various political positions as provided for by the Kenya Constitution.
Otundo said that nominations should be given to women who have unsuccessfully contested for various elective seats.
Otundo who unsuccessfully contested for the Nyaribari Chache constituency by-election in 2013 against the current MP, Richard Tong'i, feels that nominations dished out randomly to party loyalists, activists and financial benefactors.
"Political parties went against the spirit of competitiveness between men and women in various elective positions," said Otundo.
Speaking to this writer in her office, Otundo expressed reservations about the seats dished out to woman perceived to be politically correct to the party leadership without gaging the nominees' capacity and ability to deliver on the positions they have been nominated to.
She proposed that parties should nominate women with various expertise and diverse knowledge on various issues affecting their communities instead of nominating women to fill positions without bringing value to women representation.
"This idea of nominating women for the sake of gender balance is not a noble idea. Let women compete for various elective seats and if they fail to win, they be given a second chance through nomination to the respective seats they unsuccessfully contested for," observed Otundo.
Otundo raised concern over a large number of women MCAs nominated by various political parties in Kisii County Assembly, whose performance was rated dismally in terms of contributions on the floor of the House and checking of the county executive.
She also poked holes on the position of the County Women Representative,a position she regretted took women for a ride since the occupier of the office does not have a well defined constitutional responsibility and mandate befitting that position.
"The drafters of the new constitution of Kenya, virtually took women of Kenya for a political ride since they did not expressly specify the constitutional roles and responsibilities of the occupier of the office of the County Women Representative,” said Otundo.
