A women leader from Kisii has called on political parties to increase women representation in party’s election boards so as to create a level playing ground for female candidates as 2017 general elections approach.
Maendeleo ya Wanawake, Kisii County chair lady, Mrs Bathsheba Sanaya said more women representation at the boards will enable fair play in issuing nomination certificates for those vying for political seats.
She said women in the county got a raw deal in 2013 elections after political parties dished the certificates to influential and financially powerful men during the primaries.
Speaking to the press in Kisii town this morning Sanaya told parties to support strong and visionary women who have leadership abilities for various political seats.
“Having many women in our assemblies would mean we achieve the two-thirds gender rule with minimum nominations and save the country money,” she noted.
She said women who have been elected in leadership positions have demonstrated leadership skills, citing Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire and her Mbita counterpart, Millie Odhiambo among others.
She asked various government agencies to protect women from intrusion into their privacy by male counterparts during campaigns.
“Men have perfected the art of maligning women’s personalities by falsely accusing them of immorality to discourage them while women do not know the art of dirty politics," she said.
