A vocal Coast politician has been arrested on suspicion of possessing inciting materials.

Nicholas Mrima Wanyepe was apprehended as he was leaving a church in Mtwapa, Kilifi County on Saturday night, according to the Daily Nation.

Charles Omollo, a Kilifi youth leader, said Wanyepe was arrested over plans to swear in opposition leader Raila Odinga.

"I have visited him. The police claim he knows where Raila will be sworn in and that is why they arrested him," Omollo said.

"We don't understand why he was not taken to the Mtwapa police station but brought to Kilifi."

Wanyepe, known for his fiery political statements, contested for the Kilifi South parliamentary seat in the August 8 election as an Independent candidate after losing in the ODM nominations to the incumbent MP, Ken Chonga.

Kilifi County Police Commander Ben Kogo said the politician had materials likely to incite the public against the Government.

"We will charge the suspect for being in possession of inciting materials," Kogo said.

Wanyepe is expected to appear in court today (Monday).
