An aspirant for the post of governor in Kisumu, Asaka Nyangara, has urged the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene and help farmers contain stray hippos.
Through his Facebook post, he noted that he has heard complaints from farmers about the hippo invasions.
"Whatever is happening to farmers in Tura Nyando is depressing. I have received many complaints from farmers of regular attacks by hippopotamus and slow response by KWS. This must now stop. If KWS will not adopt a proactive approach to dealing with such cases then we will be forced to deploy all options on the table," he said.
"Our people ca not keep being attacked by these animals as if KWS is now operating from the moon totally oblivious of what's happening here on the scorched earth. It is totally unfair, as they enjoy their allowances and pay, our farmers will be harvesting pain, misery and untold agony. No, KWS must get serious."
Tura farmers along River Nyando in Nyando sub county have complained over invasion of hippopotamus of recent.
The farmers through their leader Elijah Owino said the hippos make appearances, particularly during the rainy season when the water level in river Nyando rises and crops are maturing.
"The hippos have been seen invading the farms and particularly during rainy seasons like now when the water level in the river is high," Owino said on Wednesday.
"Every time they invade a farm, we can trace foot marks as they came out of the river."
The village administrator, Wilson Oula, said they had informed KWS concerning the matter.
"We reported the matter to KWS officers in 2013," he said adding that their efforts to scare the animals were fruitless.
The animals he said destroy crops.
