The events that led to the demise of Public Works PS Mariam El Maawy are suspicious, Lamu politician Rishad Amana has said. Amana, who is Maawy’s cousin, said he can read malice in the PS’s Mpeketoni attack, which was linked to suspected al-Shabaab militia. In an exclusive interview with The Star, Amana claimed that he had information indicating the attack on the PS who died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment in South Africa might not have been orchestrated by the terrorist group. The ODM politician, who is a fierce critic of the Jubilee regime has called for a thorough probe into the attack.Maawy suffered gunshot injuries to the chest and burns on the legs. Her nephew Arif Kassim, a trainee pilot, was also killed during the attack. Amana further said that the attack on the PS was orchestrated, adding that al-Shabaab are only being used as a scapegoat.“There was no al-Shabaab. It was a government attack. Don’t be cheated. The time that [Coast regional coordinator Nelson] Marwa came and told us we are hiding terrorists is the same time the attack happened,” said Amana, as quoted by the daily. The deceased will be buried today (Friday) at the Langata cemetery.
