A Kiambu politician was on Wednesday robbed, in broad daylight, items valued at over Sh23,000.Gladys Chania, who unsuccessfully vied for the Kiambu Woman Representative seat in the August 8 general elections, was robbed of her phone and her son's medication by criminals who waylaid her outside a private clinic in Thika Town."I went to board my car after buying my son some medicine but before I could start on the ignition, I heard someone knock on my car window but [as I opened] the right door, the left door flung open and a thug took away everything I had placed on the passenger seat. That is how I lost my phone and my son's medication all valued at Sh23,100," said Chania as quoted by the Nation. This comes at a time when muggings, conning and robberies are on the rise in the industrial town, with residents pointing an accusing finger to security officers' laxity to tame the vice.Locals claim the criminals who are alleged to be from Witeithie and Kiandutu slums are protected by the authorities in return of 'kitu kidogo'.Thika West Police Commander Willy Simba, however, dismissed the reports accusing the victims, most of whom are women, of frustrating their efforts in arresting the thugs by failing to report the incidents to the security agencies."They make complaints on social media but do not report to us. It is hard to establish the truth in some of these allegations especially when they are not reported," Simba told the local daily.
