Tension engulfed Nyaronge village on Saturday during the funeral of Mary Anyieni, sister to former assistant minister Zephaniah Anyieni, after angry supporters of a local politician threw stones at a Borabu-based politician over claims that he had overstepped his mandate.
Patel Juma, who hails from Chepilat ward, came to condole the bereaved family and was delivering his speech before the ugly incident.
According to eye witnesses, trouble begun when the Borabu based politician accused Ken Atuti of incompetency, before angry supporters of the accused contested the statement and ordered him out of the pavilion.
They started hauling insults at the politician, besides throwing blunt objects only to be calmed down Atuti.
“The function was temporarily disrupted after Juma accused Gesima MCA of failing to deliver on his constituents. They warned him before starting to throw blunt objects and stones to the main dais,” said Alice Ondieki, an eye witness.
“They were angered by the statement since Atuti was just a visitor from the neighbouring Gesima, though the location is at the border of Chepilat and Gesima. They wanted Juma to instead talk about Borabu politics instead of Kitutu Masaba,” added Alex Nyachieng’a.
However, they situation was later controlled by Mwongori Chief David Ogega, who asked the residents to respect leaders when delivering speeches in major functions.
