A Kitutu Masaba politician has faulted the county government of Nyamira for allegedly excluding orphans in the region from development programmes.
Addressing Magombo residents on Thursday, Victor Ogeto, the founder of Ogeto Swanya Foundation said many orphans in the region are unable to access quality education and care due to poverty.
He urged the county leadership to consider setting aside a kitty that will fund the education of orphans and children from poor backgrounds.
“I want to urge the county government of Nyamira to come up with a clear strategy of educating orphans and children from needy backgrounds. Most of them cannot be able to access quality education and some end up dropping out of school regardless of their academic prowess. I plead with the county government to set aside a kitty that will fund the education of such children,” he said.
Ogeto said support from well-wishers is not enough and emphasised the need for the county government to supplement it.
“I understand that supporting orphans is not part of the county’s obligation but a humanitarian activity. I therefore wish to urge the county to join well-wishers in helping such children in the society,” he said.
He urged members of county assembly to help come up with a legislation that would see the kitty factored in the county’s subsequent budgets.
“I know we are able to set aside the kitty through the assembly if they are willing. It will be a worthy project and I am sure other counties will emulate Nyamira. It is the responsibility of leaders to help orphans and needy children to get quality education,” he said.
