President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday signed the Political Parties Bill 2016 at Harambee House Nairobi.
The bill enables the elected leaders including MPs to retain their seats even after they ditch the parties they were elected through. The bill comes a time when the Jubilee affiliate parties are in bid to merge into one political outfit, Jubilee Party (JP) that the President will seek re-election.
Speaking after the President signed the bill into law, Noah Wekesa said the outfit shall bring to an end tribal parties in Kenya.
"We shall never have parties affiliated to certain tribes since Jubilee Party shall cut across all ethnic communities. That is the Kenya of today," said Wekesa who is among the leaders mandated with coming up with the JP outfit.
Speaking to Kameme FM on Monday, Starehe MP Maina Kamanda had said the affiliated parties shall soon merge since they had been waiting for the bill to be signed into law.
"We'll have the go ahead after the President assents to that bill since all the eight parties including TNA and URP have complied with the requirements," said Kamanda.
This is a relief for MPs and senators wishing to change their parties, which will see many opposition MPs ditching to Jubilee especially from Wiper who have vowed to work with the Jubilee government including Machakos governor Dr Alfred Mutua.
