Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation Workers Secretary General Francis Wangara has warned politicians from the sugar growing areas against derailing the scheduled privatisation of government-owned sugar mills.

Wangara says the union fully supports the sale of the factories noting that the state of the sugar sector is in bad shape and the only way out is privatisation.

He says that politicians should put in mind the suffering of farmers and workers and speed up the privatisation process.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, he dispelled perceptions being peddled by politicians that nucleus land for the sugar factories will be sold once the mills are privatised.

Wangara says farmers will be allowed to have shares in the companies and told politicians to help farmers to purchase shares.

Last month elected leaders drawn from sugar growing areas met the Privatisation Commission team in Kisumu and vowed to frustrate the process unless the land matter, where the factories stand is addressed.
