Political interests in the Nyamira County leadership might have denied Kisii University vice chancellor from collaborating with the county government to lay a foundation for the proposed Nyamira University, Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire has said.

Speaking on Sunday at Magombo township during a fundraiser, the MP said the Prof John Akama’s bid to have a branch that would be under the umbrella of Kisii University were thwarted when the governor realised the don’s aspiration to have better governance in the county.

“The county leadership is full of corruption and bribery," Bosire claimed.

"Recently, they denied Kisii University from launching its branch here. This is because the VC has been critical of the governor’s leadership. He was denied the opportunity in favor of University of Eldoret.”

Bosire urged the don to continue calling for reforms besides vowing to rally against the memorandum that was signed by the county government with the University of Eldoret.

“I want to urge by brother to continue with his call for good governance. He may not have political aspirations but his closeness with political leaders is vital for our growth. Though they signed the deal, the game is not yet over,” he added.

However, Prof Akama, who was in attendance, could neither admit nor deny but insisted of the need to believe in local institutions.

“We have a task to perform and the local leadership must have believed in our institutions. As university leaders, we also have a chance to advocate for the right in the society,” he said.

Recently, Nyamira County government signed a memorandum of understanding with University of Eldoret to start a branch dubbed Nyamira University College.
