Garissa Governor Nathif Jama said the youths should enroll in the polytechnics to get training and acquire skills for them to get jobs in the county.

Jama said keeping the youths busy will ensure they don’t engage in crimes or do drugs adding that the polytechnics were introduced by the government to equip young people with relevant skills.

The governor was speaking in Garissa Town when he handed out seven brick-making machines to be used to train a minimum of 30 youths in the seven sub counties.

“There has been a history of our boys, particularly the local ones, not being too keen on technical jobs or joining vocational training,” said Jama.

The governor noted that the county cannot employ all the youth, saying that white-collar jobs are limited and that there are much more avenues of making it successful in their lives.

“Formalization of the informal sector is one of the approaches the county uses to end unemployment. We are interested in reducing youths dependence on being employed. We would rather encourage them to embrace starting businesses in agriculture, carpentry or brick-making,” he said.

Jama urged parents to enroll their children to local youth polytechnics to ensure they acquire the skills to enable them support themselves.
