Low civic education and poor funding affected the ongoing voter registration exercise, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official has said.
Central Rift Valley Coordinator David Towett said the low turn out is as a result of little and poor civic education that was done prior to and during the exercise.
Towett said IEBC did not carry out enough civic education due to the limited funds they received from National Treasury.
Towett said that the commission is not to blame for the low voter turn out because they presented their budget to the treasury early enough for consideration.
“Had the IEBC been given the money it requested then things would have been different because we would have carried out extensive civic education and the results would have been a huge turnout of people,” he said on phone.
He also blamed political leaders for failing to play their role in mobilising people to come out and register as voters.
“As much as people are blaming the IEBC, we must also remember that politicians failed to mobilise people in their areas to come out and register and that contributed to the low turn out of voters,” he said.
