Speaking in Kisii, he said a large number of students are studying courses they never wished or liked to pursue which ultimately leads to frustrations and thus dropouts.

He outlined parents and peers as the main factor contributing to poor course choices.

He said the university students influence one another to pursue courses far much from their wish because their friends have chosen.

“We have had cases of students changing their courses to suit a friend’s course,” he said.

He said parents want their children to pursue courses such as engineering, architecture even if the child did not perform well and are even ready to invest all their income in those courses.

He warned that this turns out ugly for the student who may not catch up in class and as time goes by become frustrated and eventually indulge in drug and substance abuse where they get kicked out of the system.

He called upon parents to guide their children and allow them to take courses of their choice.

“Allow your children to pursue courses they like. Do not push them into courses you yourself like or did years ago. This will ensure a smooth sail for them and save you from paying fees that may never yield.” He cautioned.
