A Kisii based Children Rights Officer, Samuel Nyongesa has blamed the increased cases of fire in schools as a result of poor guidance, counseling and lack of role models.

He was responding to the increased cases of fire incidences in schools in Kisii.

Speaking to this writer today, he claims that schools have emphasized more on material success without mentoring the children’s moral behavior.

“A child who is well guided and brought up cannot indulge in activities such as thinking of bringing down a building by setting it on fire,” he said.

He claims schools no longer set an example as of good morals as some teachers even prey on their own students.

“We have lost a sense of discipline. We care little about our children behavior," he said.

"There are increased cases of school children using drugs and taking alcohol yet the schools and society put little efforts to curb such behaviors,” he added.

He says before prosecuting the students, we should think as a society what we have done to ensure morally upright children.

“It takes the effort of each and every individual to ensure our children are raised up as responsible people,” said Nyongesa.
