A set of six-kilogram gas cylinders (photo| The standard)Poor homes will soon start acquiring six-kilogram gas cylinders with cooking apparatus at a discounted price of Sh.2000 down from Sh.5000.
This is part of the under government subsidy plan aimed at cutting reliance on kerosene, charcoal, and harmful firewood. The cylinders dubbed Gas Yetu will be distributed across the country by the National Oil which is owned by the government."This campaign is meant to increase uptake of cooking gas by low-income households," said Maryjane Mwangi, National Oil CEO.The company currently sells a complete six-kilogram gas cylinder at about sh.5000.The equivalent cylinder of the new Gas Yetu brand at sh2000 is set to absolve poor homes from the cheaper but harmful cooking fuels.Initially, the Treasury allocated the ministry of Energy sh 2.2billion for the program but later added it sh 700 million in a mini budget.
