Poor parenting has been blamed on the increased number of young men engaging in crime and irresponsible drinking in Kiambu County. Limuru MP Eng. Kiragu has said that many parents have been abandoning their male children after they complete class 8 putting them at risk of being influenced negatively.
"If we as parents could only support the boy child as required even this issue of alcoholism and crime would come to an end", said Kiragu. "Let us be true to ourselves; when you abandon your son at the age of 14 and tells him that he is a grown-up, what do you expect of him if not getting into drugs and other vices?", he added.
He observed that a girl child at the same age of 14 is strictly under her parents' watch while the boy is told to go out and 'do what other men are doing'. He further asked the parents to show their children maximum love including the ones that do not perform well in school saying they could be good in other areas. He was speaking in Mutarakwa yesterday after inspecting the Mutarakwa-Thogoto Road.
