Commuters from Tana River and Lamu counties were left stranded after authorities closed down a section of the Lamu-Garsen road on May 7.
Lamu County police commander Muchangi Kioi and Deputy Commissioner Louis Rono toured the area where they said the road had been closed after it caved-in over floods following heavy rains.
"The road has completely been rendered impassable and dangerous. Parts of the road and bridges at Milihoi and Koreni areas caved in and were swept away by ongoing floods and heavy rains on Monday evening," said Kioi.
Drivers were also cautioned against parking at the flooded Milihoi area to avoid being an easy target for Al-Shabaab terrorists since the area is a terror hotspot.
Several people have been attacked at the area, including the late former Public Works Principal Secretary Mariam El Maawy whose convoy was attacked on July 13, 2017.
Kioi advised commuters to use the Mpeketoni-Kizuke feeder road, saying officers had been deployed to guard the routes and provide security.
"The continued use of this road at this moment is extremely dangerous. The road has been flooded and cut off here at Milihoi and Koreni. We have made arrangements for a smaller road from Mpeketoni to Kizuke Old Jetty to be used. Thereafter, people will connect by boat. It’s better that way and safer than this."
He warned that those who won’t heed the directive will be endangering their lives.
Kioi however assured the public that adequate security officers have been deployed to guard the road day and night and that as such there was no cause for alarm.
