Joseph Kamaru, 79, is currently being admitted at Nairobi's Avenue Hospital.

According to the chairman of Kikuyu Council of Elders Wachira Kiago, the popular musician had been at the health facility for a few days but did not disclose the sickness he was suffering from.

"He is stable and we are asking all Kenyans of goodwill to pray for him," he said after visiting the singer at the hospital on Wednesday.

Kiago was accompanied by Kamaru's fellow musician Joseph Kariuki popularly known as 'Kiarutara'.

Kamaru is a living legend on the Kenyan music scene having composed more than 2,000 songs.

He started his long musical career in 1965 after recording his first song 'Uthoni wa Mbaathiini'.

Kamaru, the great son of Wanjiru and Macharia, went ahead to produce a dozen of hits which are still loved by thousands of his fans locally and abroad.

Among them include, Ndari ya Mwarimu', Muti Uyu, Chunga Rurimi among others.

However, in the early nineties, he switched from secular to gospel music after 'becoming born again'.

Kamaru has been producing Christian chorals and preaching since receiving Christ.

He also operates a music store at Nairobi's River Road.
