This is because it will interfere with their oversight role in the senate.

The report by The Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee further suggested that barring the senators will bottle their current appetite to unseat governors.

"The committee holds the view that there is a need to bar senators from participating in gubernatorial elections following that which they will serve as senators," said the committee.

“The committee observed that there is a conflict of interest between senators and governors where the senators, who are supposed to safeguard and represent the interests of the counties, end up having interests to be leaders of these counties," said the report.

The committee said such a move dilutes the provisions of Article 96(1) of the constitution which states that the senate represents the counties, and serves to protect the interests of the counties and their governments," stated the committee.

The report further said that the relevance of the senate is debatable and its functions may need to be reviewed afresh.

The report is set to create a storm in the political arena considering a number of senators had shown their interests in different gubernatorial seats across the country.
