The Postal Corporation of Kenya is set to get a Sh500 million revenue boost after it was awarded a contract to transport election materials for the repeat presidential elections on October 26.
IEBC said Posta would be awarded the contract for “distribution of elections materials and equipment”.
Posta was also the IEBC’s logistical contractor during the August 8 General Election.
The Sh500 million set aside for Posta in the current budget will be a major boost for the corporation.
Posta has been battling low revenues as Kenyans turn away from sending letters to using electronic forms of communication.
However, recent statistics from the Communications Authority show that there is hope for the agency if it pursues new business opportunities in e-commerce.
The data shows that there was a 59.3 per cent increase in the number of parcels sent locally in the year to June 2017.
A study commissioned by the Ministry of Information has also recommended that Posta turns to technology and pare down its workforce if it hopes to survive.
