Posta will for the next one month provide last-mile connections for Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line travelers as the company initiates new ways of earning revenue.
Postmaster-General Dan Kagwe said SGR passengers will pay Sh100 for the trip from Syokimau to the city centre. He, however, said Posta will hold back on fully-fledged operations unless the SGR train increases the frequency of traveler trains to more than one trip per day.“If it makes business sense we will continue doing it. Frankly speaking, if we are doing one train it might not be very viable business,” Kagwe said.Posta reported in the year ending June it made a Sh1.5 billion loss, the worst performance ever. The company earlier in the week launched SGR commemorative stamps that are set to rake in Sh200 million.Kagwe said Posta will also be switching onto ferrying its parcels and mail via train, reducing on the high transportation costs.“This means we can do same day mails in Mombasa. We will get our trucks off the road and if it is possible we will get a postal wagon.”Posta is also gearing towards opening offices at some of the SGR stations along the Mombasa-Nairobi route. The SGR passenger train was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday at Miritini, Mombasa and will cost travelers Sh700 from Mombasa-Nairobi and back traveling on economy class.
