The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is set to begin transporting parcels between Mombasa and Nairobi using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).The new plan, which is poised to begin in January, will reduce transportation costs by 50 percent. Postal Kenya General Manager for mail, Eliud Lell said the state corporation currently spends Sh80,000 per day to transport parcels and mail between the two cities.Lell said the new move will see transportation costs reduce to Sh40,000."The cost of transporting mail via train is likely to reduce by half,” said Lell on Tuesday, as quoted by Business Daily. Lell said they are considering getting off the road completely and begin using a freight wagon that will carry parcels and mail to and from the port city. "This means that we will get away from the road and acquire a postal wagon if all goes well," said Lell, adding that they expect to make the changes as early as January 2018."We are set to start transporting our parcels and mail via the SGR train in January,” he added. The corporation has been on a downward trend, posting a Sh1.5 billion loss in the year ending June 2017.
