Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are wants the 2017 general polls postponed by at least one year so that time is created for proper preparations.
Mr Mong’are argued that the country should currently be preparing for a referendum instead of the general polls since the constitution needed to be amended before the poll.
He said that IEBC presently lacks sufficient funds for the poll and added that this could hamper their ability to deliver credible elections.
Mongare also argued that the delayed appointment of election commissioners at IEBC was a big reason to stop the elections because preparations have been being made by individuals and not the commission itself.
“The law is very clear that elections must be prepared by a commission, and not the people who are doing it illegally. Right now, we don’t have an elections commission and those who are preparing for the polls are engaging in a nullity,” he said as quoted by Citizen.
The lawmaker further took issues with the preparations, saying they were contravening Justice Kreigler’s recommendations in a report that warned against organising elections with a commission that has been in office for less than two years.
