The Chairman of Nakuru West Youth Groups Association Peter Muya who is also a local political activist said local leaders were playing politics with youth employment but had adamantly failed to create opportunities for the youth who are suffering from poverty and unemployment.

He attributed the high rate of crime to unemployment and poverty arguing that many local youth had been jailed in connection with crime and were bound to spend part of their prime age in detention.

“We wonder why politicians play politics with youth empowerment yet many youth are languishing in poverty and some are spending their youthful years in jails because of being implicated in criminal cases. It is high time our governor and his government came up with tangible policies to pave way for youth employment,’’ said the youth leader.

In his address to members of the association at Muslim Social Hall in Kaptembwa estate on Wednesday, Muya stated that majority of local youth are active voters and play big roles in nurturing local leaders but their plight was not being taken into consideration.

“Why should our youth be used in campaigns and voting yet they are the poorest in society. We shall petition our governor to address this issue,’’ Muya affirmed.

He clarified that only a handful of youth have benefitted from government employment opportunities yet local leaders claim they are concerned about the plight of the youths.
