Kenya Power and Kenya Electricity Generating Company workers have threatened to down tools if Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) goes on with intended job evaluation.
Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers Union national general secretary, Ernest Nadome, said the union is against the job evaluation targeting the two parastatals.
Nadome said workers are prepared to switch off the country should the commission insist on job evaluation.
“It will be a mother of all battles if the commission goes ahead with the evaluation, the country will be plunged into darkness,” said Nadome.
He said the two bodies have for a long time been carrying internal job evaluation and wondered why the commission is interested to do the same.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu after meeting union officials, Nadome said the constitution is clear that the institutions are generating their own revenue and are not bound by the commission.
He said the commission should not interfere with the running of such institutions noting that there are court cases to determine the role of the commission.
“The constitution is very clear and it is evident that the commission is over stepping its mandate. There are already court cases questioning the commission’s interference with such duties,” said Nadome.
Nadome said the union will call for a strike should the commission go on with the job evaluation in the two corporate bodies.
