The CS on Monday said that the commissioning of the Olkaria project will help introduce a flat rate of about Sh35 per unit (4 US cents).

“We have already reduced fuel charge from 7.22 (US) cents to 5.1 cents,” Chirchir said.

“The commissioning of Olkaria IV will see the company generate more fuel at a cheaper cost.”

Speaking at the Olkaria geothermal power plant in Naivasha, the CS said that Kengen and Kenya Power have started studying the demand pattern for power.

“We want to control the number of partnerships that we sign and ensure that we only sign the ones that are important. Hence the Electricity Regulation Commission will team up with various institutions to try and analyse the market,” he said.

No added that the current power supply in the country was in excess, saying that the country already had enough to meet the demand.

“The current demand for electricity is 1,500 megawatts but we are currently producing 2,000MW. We are aiming for 2,300MW by December this year.”

The president is set to commission the Olkaria V power plant next week on Friday.
