Correctional Services Principle Secretary Micah Powon has revealed that his docket has started measures to ensure suspects facing terrorism related cases are separated from other remandees.
While addressing journalists on Thursday in Nakuru during an inspection tour of prison staff housing units at the Nakuru GK Prison, Powon said they have already started implementing the measure, citing Shimo la Tewa Prison in Mombasa.
He said the government is aware of the threat posed by terrorism and so there was urgent need to remain ever vigilant in fighting the vice even in correctional facilities.
Powon also expressed his concern regarding congestion in prisons saying correctional facilities in Kenya now hold more than 55,000 prisoners instead of 27, 000 prisoners.
The said increase according to him has forced the government to spend more money to cater for their needs.
For this reason, he advised the Judiciary to speed up cases or consider alternative forms of punishment in bid to address the issue of congestion in the prisons.
Powon was accompanied by Prisons Commissioner General Isaiah Osugo among other senior officers from the prisons service.
