Wamatangi said that the country needs a calm and peaceful environment ahead of the 2017 polls, further observing that already tension is building up in some parts of the country as it gears up to the elections.

“Religious leaders should come out and support peace initiatives as we head to the general elections,” said the Kiambu senator when he adderssed journalists at Kiambu town on Sunday.

The senator also asked religious leaders to help quell rising tension among politicians allied to the government and opposition.

“Religious leaders have a big role to play on peace and they should be on the frontline in agitating for peaceful elections,” he added.

The senator at the same time urged opposition leaders to respect the constitution.

Wamatangi said that opposition, led by Raila Odinga continues to disrespect the constitution they supported and endorsed to Kenyans.

He said that the weekly anti-IEBC protests show that the opposition does not respect the constitution.

“It is unfortunate that the people who agitated for the constitution are the same ones who want to contravene it,” he added the Kiambu senate lawmaker.

The senator urged Kenyans to shun the weekly anti-IEBC protests being called by opposition leaders.
