Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has told Muslims across the country to pray for peace during this electioneering period.
Jama said without peace, Kenya will not realise the much needed development. Business success, he said, depends on peace.
He was speaking in Garissa town during the launch of the Iftar Sa’aem Initiative aimed at helping low income families and those from humble backgrounds during Ramadhan.
“It is nobody’s wish to see our country burn like it happened during the 2007-2008 post-election violence where lives were lost as a result of the clashes,” Jama who is defending his seat on a Wiper party ticket said.
He said all Kenyans should preach peace during elections. Politicians dividing Kenyans, he added, should be rejected at the ballot.
“It is no secret that the stakes are so high in the election, with each side of the political divide exuding confidence of winning. However, we need to note that elections will be over within a short time but the country remains,” the county chief said.
The Sa’aem program will run for one month and targets 28,000 poor families. It entails giving food hampers to the families to break the fast in the evening and allocate cash for the needy.
“We have launched this programme to make a difference in communities across Garissa county. This year and during the month of giving, we will instill values of sharing, compassion and empathy,” he said.
