Those eying Nyamira county gubernatorial seat in 2017 elections will have to face a spirited fight from a youngsters, a group of youths have warned.
In what seems to be a generation battle, the incumbent, Hon. John Nyagarama will have to not only face his perennial competitors but also an emerging coalition of youths.
On Tuesday, several youths convened in Mash park hotel in what they described as ‘strategic meeting’ of reorganizing the county politics besides saving it from what they termed as ‘maladministration’ from the current leadership.
According to Samson Ongeri, a communication consultant in London, the move was necessary to prepare youths to take over from old guards as a way of protecting devolution.
“The movement is bigger than what you are seeing here. We want a total overhaul in county leadership. Those whom we entrusted with power have started on a wrong note and that is why we are here,” he said.
Mr. Ongeri said they will use a common strategy of demanding elections from grassroots in their preferred political vehicle before announcing their preferred candidate.
“We will start by demanding grassroots elections in our preferred party and you must expect many of us to participate. We are ready to even relinquish our jobs from oversees to ensure we capture gubernatorial seat,” he said.
They also vowed to compel independent electoral commission to reach youths in villages as a way of registering many youths who will add their numbers to the expected revolution in leadership.
“The IEBC has an obligation to register any adult and we will summon them soon. We want more youths to register. Be sure that we will bring a competent candidate who will give devolved government a deserved meaning. The same shall apply for MCAs,” he said.
End.
