President Uhuru Kenyatta has advised students to embrace hard work and discipline, saying the two virtues are key ingredients for success.
Saying the country’s future and socio-economic development depended on the youth, President Kenyatta urged them to be focused in their lives.
“Everything that we are doing today including the building of roads, electricity connection and making sure there is an enabling environment to do business so as to create employment – is ultimately for the benefit of your generation,” President Kenyatta told the youth.
He added: “It would be a tremendous pity if all that was done and the people who are meant to benefit from it were not focused on their future.”
The President was speaking when he stopped to acknowledge greetings from primary school pupils and secondary school students during his voter registration mobilisation campaign in Kiambu County.
Speaking when he addressed students of St. Francis Girls High School Mang’u and Maryhill Girls’ High School, President Kenyatta particularly urged the girl-child to understand that she has a big role to play in the country’s future growth.
“We are especially keen on seeing the girl-child take a central role in the socio-economic development of the country,” the President said.
He cited the example of his Cabinet Secretaries who, he said, include five strong women serving in key ministries.
“If you look at my Cabinet today, you will see I have Amina Mohamed as CS for Foreign Affairs, who hopefully next week will be elected the Chairperson of the African Union Commission,” President Kenyatta said.
The President pointed out that other women Cabinet Secretaries are Rachel Omamo (Defence), Judy Wakhungu (Environment), Phyllis Kandie (Labour) and Sicily Kariuki (Public Service, Youth and Gendar Affairs).
