President Uhuru Kenyatta has improved the Nairobi county fire response process after flagging off 26 new fire engines to deal with the emergencies.
The trucks were supplied by the Somati Vehicles under their Official Aid Funded Project which is financed by the government of Belgium.
According to Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, each of the 17 constituencies in the city will be allocated at least one fire engine.
Gikomba Market, which has suffered several fire incidences in the recent past was allocated two of the engines.
The equipment had long arrived at the Port of Mombasa some time back and continued to incur demurrage to the tune of Sh27.6 million which was owed to Kenfreight Ltd by August 31.
“I negotiated with the freight company, and they not only discounted the amount, but also stopped billing storage and handling charges from September 1,” said Governor Sonko.
