A group of parents from Subukia is calling on the government to do all it can to avert the looming strike by teachers saying their children have suffered for long.

Speaking on Tuesday, the parents said the tussle between government and teachers over salaries has also contributed to dwindling of education standards in the country.

“Enough is enough. As parents, we are saying that the teachers and the government are going too far. Our children are losing out on their education. Here the children are suffering but for how long? These fights have gone on too far,” said an angry parent Miriam Muthoni.

The parents said while other children are learning smoothly in private schools, their children are suffering as no learning is taking place.

“We cannot afford to take our children to private schools. Only in government schools that we have hope in educating our children yet performance continues to deteriorate as private schools continue excelling,” said another parent, Priscilla Wangui.

Wangui said the teachers boycott is creating a wider gap between pupils and students in public and those in private schools. She called on president Uhuru Kenyatta to have interests of their children at heart and resolve issues once and for all.

A spot check at a number of schools in Kabazi and Subukia areas, however, indicated that students and pupils have reported to school with only a few teachers found in class teaching.
