President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday granted a charter to Garissa University, making it a fully fledged university and the 31st chartered public university.

The institution was previously a constituent college of Moi University, and he appointed Prof. Hellen Sambili as the institution's first chancellor.

President Kenyatta, speaking during the award of the charter ceremony held at State House Nairobi said giving a charter is triumph to the institution that was attacked by terrorists two years ago.

"Kenya will triumph over those who spread hate, evil and destruction," he said.

He assured that the institution will now offer good education to learners from all over the country.

"I am confident that the institution now has the capacity to provide quality university education to all learners from across the country", he added.
