Mr Zuma in the past few weeks has been under pressure from the public to resign.

In a Televised address to the Nation from Pretoria, Mr Zuma announced that he had quit with immediate effect.

This means Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will assume office ahead of an election within 30 days.

Yesterday in a tweet President Uhuru Kenyatta wished Mr Zuma well in his next leadership roles.

"My brother @SAPresident we appreciate and salute you for the role you played in enhancing our friendship with the People of South Africa. We wish you well in your next phase of Service and Leadership. @MYANC has once again reminded us the importance of strong political parties," read the tweet.
