Cord leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta were involved in a trade of words Tuesday, after Odinga claimed that the National Intelligent Service is being used to register foreigners as voters.
Odinga’s words that the Jubilee administration has enlisted NIS agency to rig the August 8 elections raised a storm, with President Kenyatta responding almost immediately.
Raila said that the opposition has evidence that Ugandans and Ethiopians are being registered as voters.
Speaking in Kilifi County, Odinga claimed that NIS officers had been recruited as IEBC clerks and security officers.
Accompanied by Mombasa Governor Ali Joho, his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi and six MPs and a senator, the leaders urged their supporters to monitor all polling stations in the country, to avert what they term as a plan to rig the elections.
“The intelligence officers, who are paid by the taxpayers’ money, are used every now and then to rig elections, last time, they were used the same way, when the IEBC picks clerks, presiding officers, returning officers, the NIS ensures they have their people in there,” said Odinga.
Joho and Kingi maintained the same talk, warning the Jubilee administration not to even think of rigging the elections.
The leaders further called on public service officers to stick to their mandate, and keep off politics.
“Nkaiserry should not give orders that he has no right nor authority to implement,” added Odinga.
