President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday received two awards won by the LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority for its leadership in infrastructure development.
In March, LAPSSET won a 2016 Global Infrastructure Leadership award in the opportunity creation category; in May, it won the African Investor award for regional investment initiative of the year.
The awards were presented by LAPSSET’s Director and Chief Executive Officer, Silvester Kasuku, during a brief ceremony at State House Nairobi, also attended by Deputy President William Ruto.
President Kenyatta commended the Authority for setting the pace in infrastructure development through its transformational projects.
“We believe that these projects will contribute significantly to spurring development in some of our rural regions, supporting the growth of our tourism sector, and improving the livelihoods of all Kenyans, for good,” said the President.
The President also observed that the project would serve not just Kenyans, but East Africans and the continent.
He pointed out that by undertaking various smaller projects, the Government and the LAPSSET Development Authority would finally achieve the dream of connecting the region.
LAPSSET is also the latest addition to the Presidential Infrastructure Championship Initiative (PICI), an initiative of the African Union. It was endorsed as a PICI project during the AU Heads of State and Government Committee meeting, at the AU summit of June 2015.
Cabinet Secretary James Macharia thanked the President for his support, saying that the construction of the first three births of Lamu Port was on schedule.
