Some of the informal settlement identified as special planning zones include Nyalenda, Manyatta, Obunga, Bandani and Kololeni.

Speaking to journalists on Monday afternoon at Tom Mboya Labour College, Governor Jack Ranguma confirmed President Uhuru Kenyatta will officiate the second Devolution Conference that will host 6,500 delegates.

“The president will have an opportunity to look at Nyalenda slum, informal settlement near Kisumu City and launch a massive programme,” said Governor Ranguma.

He said the programme will open up the drainage system and roads that will improve hygiene and access to the slum area.

“We will then plan it in a manner that it will accommodate unity of Nyalenda community, both the low and high,” added Ranguma.

“So that we can have a city that is well planned. With its proximity to the city center, it is important we strengthen the look of Nyalenda as well. So that we do not have a slum within a city,” further noted Ranguma.

He said the programme is similar to the one launched by President Kenyatta in Kibra slum to improve issues of sanitation.
