The news emerged on Friday after the awarding of charters to eight new universities at the Nairobi State House.

Garissa University college had initially been planned to be among the institutions of higher learning to get their charter. However, President Uhuru said he will personally travel to the North Eastern county to deliver the certification at the institution.

According to the Presidential Press Unit, Uhuru's decision on Garissa University was meant to send a louder message to Somalia terrorists that Kenya will never be cowed by acts of terrorism.

In 2014, Garissa University college suffered one of the most deadly terrorist attacks ever witnessed in the country, where over 149 students perished, forcing the institution's administrators and the education ministry to shut the institution for some time.
