President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win was on Monday upheld to the jubilation of many of his supporters across the nation.
With all obstacles now out of the way and his inauguration set for next week on Tuesday, the president’s plate is full of many pending issues to tackle.
A major task that the president and his deputy William Ruto will be to help heal the wounds of a divided nation as a result of the polls.
The depth of the division was clear on Friday last week when chaos erupted in the capital as NASA supporters clashed with the police on the return of their leader Raila Odinga.
Looting, destruction of property and killings during the welcoming event from the JKIA were a clear indication of how deep the country has sunk into tribalism.
Raila Odinga, Kenyatta’s main opponent has sworn he will never recognize Uhuru’s presidency, and it waits to be seen how the president-elect will reach out to him.
After he was declared the winner of the October 26 polls, President Kenyatta said he was ready to dialogue to heal the nation, but will do so after the Supreme Court had made a decision on the cases that had been presented at the court.
With the cases now fully determined, it waits to be seen how Kenyatta will handle the issue at hand, with all eyes on him now.
Another issue that the president will come face to face with is a deteriorating economy. Having been in the electioneering mood the better part of the year, the country has suffered largely, with many complaining of low business.
Even as he waits to be sworn in next week, President Kenyatta has a full plate on his desk, meaning he will not have time to celebrate his victory.
